Letter criticizing Thomas
[edit]In writing my thesis on Thomas I was unable to find any evidence that Schofield was the author of the New York Tribune letter and was the man behind the One who fought at Nashville. It is likely he played a role in it due to his rivalry with Thomas, but it doesn't appear he actually wrote it. I did find two sources that identified General Jacob D. Cox, who fought under Schofield as a corps commander at Nashville, as the actual author. The best source I found is Dennis Belcher's General David S. Stanley, USA: A Civil War Biography page 232. As such, I'm going to remove the statement on the letter and role in Thomas' death because it can't be verified. Nerovingian (talk) 15:36, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
Medal of Honor
[edit]The Medal of Honor, per Wikipedia's own article, was not issued to officers until 1891. In fact, Schofield's MoH citation indicates it was awarded on 2 July 1892. Not that it matters or that anyone cares, but genealogical records indicate I may be a 2nd cousin, five times removed, of the General. Duckecho 04:46, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
box?
[edit]For those who care about these information boxes, I think an inappropriate one was selected in this case. Schofield's contribution to history is significantly more important as a general than his brief tenure as secretary of war. For some other generals, such as George Marshall, I would agree, but not in Schofield's case. Hal Jespersen 21:26, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
more work needed
[edit]I worked on this article while waiting for my laptop to download and install updates(the first 2tries failed but I hope this latest works). I don't claim a military background and have not reviewed the latest book, but hope I have improved it somewhat. I don't have time for further work on it and hope others can take up the flag, so as to speak.Jweaver28 (talk) 16:35, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
