[edit]I'm not sure unincorporated community completely / correctly describes what "Ada" is. The township is filled with many unique "communities" including Adacroft Commons (www.adacroft.org), Clements Mill (www.clementsmill.com), etc. Some of these are in fact incorporated as non-profit site condominium associations. The heart and soul of Ada and the seat of her government (Township Offices) is in fact the Village of Ada.
If we are going to describe Ada as an "unincorporated community," we need to change the reference to it's location as being the boundries of the Township. If we are referring to the heart of the community, located off M21, then I believe unincorporated "Village" is the correct description.
- An "unincorporated village" in Michigan is something of an oxymoron. A "village" is a statutory type of municipal corporation. It is confusing to refer to something as unincorporated which by definition (at least in some contexts) is incorporated. A township is a separate type of statutory municipal corporation. The location of the unincorporated community of Ada is not coterminous with the township -- it refers to the place (the urban cluster) known as Ada with lies within the township of Ada. The primary reason for distinguishing them within this article is that Ada, Michigan redirects here.
- Also, although a condominium association may be a corporation, it is not an incorporated municipality and is an entirely different category of corporation. older≠wiser 22:28, May 20, 2005 (UTC)
- I'm confused. The article presently states that the "village" of Ada was founded in 1821. If not an incorporated municipality, exactly what was founded at that time? It doesn't seem likely it was a condominium association. -- SwissCelt 17:34, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
- That's a constant problem on a wiki where editors don't all use terms consistently (heck, I doubt that I always use terms consistently). At present, the community or locale of Ada is not an officially incorporated municipality. The only official local government is the Township. However, people sometimes use the term village to refer to any small settlement, regardless of its municipal status. It is also possible that Ada was once an incorporated entity and has since disincorporated. I don't know. That would require some research. older≠wiser 02:22, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
The fictional "village" of Ada
[edit]Looks like it was Ada Township which was founded in 1821, not an incorporated municipality (i.e. a "village"). I'm not sure when Rix Robinson's settlement was founded, but it seems to be either shortly before or after the township's foundation. There does not appear to have been a municipality incorporated (that is, having obtained a municipal charter of some sort) within Ada Township. I edited the article to reflect this. -- SwissCelt 23:43, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
