Many Wickes-class destroyers never saw service in World War II. If we must categorize by era, then this class belongs in World War I, when most of the ships served. Although, in my mind, this example is a good reason not to lump entire classes of vessels into eras.

If that's the case then I quite agree, a subcategory shouldn't be a subcategory when there are exceptions within it. If all members of a class did participate in WWII without exception, though, I think it's not unreasonable to subcategorize it here - if only to reduce the category clutter on the pages themselves. (note that I don't know much about naval history myself, I was just running with what previous Wikipedia editors had done before.) Bryan 15:27, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)
This class may be among the more complex. All ships served in WWI. Some served in WWII, but after being converted to minelayers. Others were transfered to the British and saw WWII under that flag. I'll bump the class up to a sub-class under US Destroyers, or move it to a WWI sub class. Some of the ships will be categorized as WWII era destroyers, others as other types of ships in WWII.
