The Cradle of American Civilization

Hi Adam - Adam here, too.

You may find it hard to believe, but Kingston, Massachusetts is indeed the "Cradle of American Civilization."

Kingston, as you know, was originally part of Plymouth when "Plymouth" stretched from what is now Bourne, Massachusetts in the south, all the way north into Scituate, Massachusetts. The towns of Marshfield, Duxbury (where the colonists hunted for "ducks") and Kingston along the coast were all parts of Plymouth.

In 1726 modern-day Kingston broke away from Plymouth due to a tax dispute This brave act inspired many colonists in their zeal to gain independence from the British Crown.

The "Cradle of American Civilization" label comes from Kingston's unparalleled contributions to the Revolutionary War.

Here are just a few of those contributions:

The shipyards in Kingston along the Jones River produced more than 11,000 ships, most of which were warships, in the Colonial period through the early Federalist period.
Apple cider was invented in the vast apple orchards of west Kingston, as were several innovative (and patented) long-term storage/bottling solutions.
Commercial cranberry production began in Kingston and Kingston remains the the town with the largest cranberry harvest per acre (by tonnage) in the United States.
The second battle of the King Philips War was fought in Kingston.
The Boston Tea Party plot was hatched in Kingston and all but three of the participants in the actual event itself were residents of Kingston.
Kingston was represented at the Continental Congress by two of its residents.
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles has created a red, white and blue "Kingston: The Cradle of American Civilization" vanity plate available to Kingston residents (or non-residents for a fee) starting June, 2007.

It's hard to picture Kingston today as having been anything more than a sleepy coastal bedroom community for Boston. Kingston's history is far richer than one may imagine. In its day, Kingston's star shone brightly across the entire Western world. --AStanhope 00:51, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
