HYP

Where did you get the text that you used to write the article HYP (Harvard-Yale-Princeton) on February 1, 2005? —Lowellian (talk) 04:48, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)

Don't know of which sources I used to write it. I probably would have searched Google for definitions but searching it now I see nothing with similar info. Uris 19:14, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The reason I'm asking is that the text you wrote for HYP (Harvard-Yale-Princeton) is almost an exact duplicate of the text of an earlier article, named HYP (universities), that was listed on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion in December 2004 and deleted (see Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/HYP (universities). Thus, you likely got the text from a Wikipedia mirror site that had not yet removed the deleted article. The page history of the old deleted page has now been merged by a sysop with the page you created.

In the future, you should be careful about copying-and-pasting large amounts of text from other sources into Wikipedia. Be sure to check that the text is not copyrighted (see Wikipedia:Copyrights). Even if the text is not copyrighted, you should list the source of the text, either in the article or on the article's talk page.

Incidentally, many Wikipedians consider it bad wikiquette to blank user talk page without linking to archives of earlier discussions. I noticed that you did archive the discussion at User talk:Uris/HYP, but it was not at all easy to discover that page. I'm not telling you you have to do anything, but this might be something worth thinking about.

Thanks Lowellian - I meant to link to the archive of this conversation and will do that now. (I seem to have lost my links to all of my conversations for the moment, thanks for bringing that to my attention.) As for "copy-and-pasting" text, it looks like there were differences (in every sentence). Instead of copy-and-pasting, it looks like I had it in front of me and just changed enough to not violate copyright. Which means that, since it was much closer to the source than the other articles I have written here, I definitely should have indicated that source. Anyways - nice to hear from you, and please excuse the obtuse mistake! Uris 23:22, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
