Hi there! I agree with what you said on the Yakubu Gowon page. I have added a picture of his (a pity it's not a colour photo. I would have preferred a picture of him in his military uniform, but couldn't find one). But YES, there are HUGE gaps in Wikipedia. Because most of the editors are English-speaking, there is a definite bias towards the United States, and, to a lesser extent, other large English-speaking nations like England and Australia. There is very little about Africa or the Pacific Island nations. I have unofficially appointed myself de-fact editor-in-chief of a Pacific Islands project (which is why I've been writing so much about Fiji of late) - after all, somebody has to do something about the gaps in Wikipedia. I'm glad to see you're doing something about Nigeria. I hope lots of others who are Africa-literate will join you. Best of luck.Davidcannon 04:51, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Yakubu Gowan/Gowon
[edit]The misspelled version ("Yakubu Gowan") gets about 70 Google hits; the correct version ("Yakubu Gowon") gets about 3000 -- the name is therefore misspelled 2% of the time on the portions of the web indexed by Google. It's standard Wikipedia practice to create redirect pages to point from possible misspellings to the correct one. It's presence creates no confusion, as it redirects immediately to the correct version. You might be interested in seeing Wikipedia:Redirect for our current policy on redirects. If you still believe that this redirect should be deleted, you should list it on Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion, rather than putting the speedy deletion notice on it again. -- Seth Ilys 22:48, 29 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Some nigerian towns
[edit]I just ran into you, and notice you are familiar with Nigera. While it's quite possible you know nothing of these small towns as Nigeria is a vast country, I still invite you to take a look at these small articles: Orie Idheze Isoko Uro
I ran into these articles a few days ago and tried to improve them at least in their English. I do not know anything about this part of the world though. This means that I managed to improve 'idol worshippers' to 'followers of a native religion', but couldn't figure out which religion. Perhaps you can do better. If not, thanks for taking a look nonetheless. Martijn faassen 01:15, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
These really are quite tiny communities, so I'd be hard pressed to say anything very specific about them, but what I can do is add general information like the ethnic composition of the areas in which they are found, the states in which they are located and so forth. I'd imagine that any religious rites practiced in these towns would be those of the larger ethnic group to which the members belong, which in these cases would seem to be the Ijaw people. The task would then seem to be to create a Wikipedia entry devoted to Ijaw religious practices, which I won't be able to take a crack at before tomorrow at the earliest. Abiola Lapite 12:20, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- I realized they were tiny. If you can add a page about the religious practices at some stage that'd be quite neat. Thanks! Martijn faassen 19:37, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Nigeria and Yoruba
[edit]I have protected Nigeria and Yoruba until you and User:YorubaMan can resolve your differences on the talk pages of those two articles. The articles are protected because time is being channeled into reverting that should be used to present sources and find the misunderstandings here. I looked over the page histories and some other pages for quite a while and I think that YorubaMan is not a vandal, he just believes that what he is reverting to is a more correct version of the article. Please have some patience. silsor 22:22, Apr 23, 2004 (UTC)
By the way, it does appear to be a single user using different machines, since all the IPs used to revert those pages seem to be here in Toronto, where I presume YorubaMan lives. silsor 22:29, Apr 23, 2004 (UTC)
- While YorubaMan is perhaps not a vandal, he is in my opinion rude and incredibly hard to work with, ideologically motivated, and not coherent. Martijn faassen 13:07, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Possible Sock Account
[edit]I'm pretty sure you have multiple accounts and have ran into your sock accounts before. It might be best for you to own up to your sock accounts and close them on your own. I might be wrong but I thought it best to let you know of my suspicions.melonbarmonster 05:55, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello Abiola Lapite! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. Please note that all biographies of living persons must be sourced. If you were to add reliable, secondary sources to this article, it would greatly help us with the current 9 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:
- Yakubu Gowon - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL

File permission problem with File:Katta very large.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Katta very large.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 03:56, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
